Perhaps my biggest complaint about the OWC MilSub MS-5517 watch is that the color of the markers on the bezel simply doesn't match the color of the lume on the dial. Actually, there is a lot of difference between the dial and the bezel. I think the watch would be a no-brainer buy for many people if the colors between the dial and bezel were more harmonious – and in the future, they very well might be, as small brands have the luxury of being flexible. The dial, for instance, is matte black with cream colored hour markers while the bezel is in black ceramic with painted on green SuperLumiNova.
Therefore, it makes sense that Apple wants to bring this tiny screen and the world behind it to the attention of a larger demographic that otherwise would not get behind the concept at such an early stage. Early adoption is of key importance, and again, it is key when it comes to a much wider than before range of people. Apparently, Apple finds that it is the design and fashion community that will help the Apple Watch find its way to the mainstream consumer. Somewhat contradicting Apple's plans, major tech-site The Verge remarked that, while the event was unsurprisingly busy – albeit incomparably smaller than what was seen when it came to the iPhone 6 hitting the stores – the Apple Watch debut in Paris attracted more fanboys than fashionistas.
Kevin Rose is the founder of Digg.com and is currently a partner at Google Ventures, the venture capital investment arm of Google, and it would not be a stretch to say that he is something of an Internet and geek celebrity. So I was very interested to learn that he has, over the past couple of years, become a serious watch geek - so much so that he even built his own watch app, Watchville. Here, he shares with us his story of how he got into watches, some of his favorite brands and why he built Watchville.
Are warranties the only benefit of paying full or close to full price for a watch? No. Over the years, I've learned of a lot of other interesting benefits that watch customers get from buying timepieces at authorized dealers and/or single brand boutiques. These are benefits that vary by store, city, and brand... as well as the consumer. So I can't really promise that any of these benefits will apply to you if you buy a watch directly from a brand or at a brand boutique, but there is a good chance at least some of what I am about to discuss will be a welcome surprise when buying a watch through an "official channel."
The initial TAG Heuer ads for the new campaign will feature people such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Maria Sharapova, Steve McQueen, and Patrick Dempsey. This is a shift from Hollywood-style personalities to athletes (for the most part) ÷ which we anticipate to be a continuing trend moving forward for the brand. TAG Heuer is well-funded, and it is probably a positive thing that they are part of the LVMH group, as changing focus on products as well as a brand message is tough.
This is the CCCP Heritage ref. CP-7019-05 watch, and it comes from a brand called "CCCP Time," which - based out of Hong Kong - produces a range of USSR-era themed watches. Some of these watches contain quartz movements, and others contain mechanical movements. Of the mechanicals, some are Japanese, and some are historic mechanical movements produced in the USSR by the watch makers Slava. This CCCP Heritage watch is among the latter, and contains a restored Slava caliber 2427 automatic movement that the modern brand was able to acquire as part of what is an interesting story.
The automatic works may be a reasonably simple complication, but they do still add extra components to a watch movement. These extra components add extra friction to the equation and the right balance of oils need to be applied to reduce this. But, however much you reduce this friction, some of it will always remain. A basic mechanical watch movement is a thing of beauty, that achieves its goal with minimal parts and minimal fuss. As soon as you start adding in extra parts then you add in extra areas where things can go wrong and extra areas of friction.
The dial design, which is lifted directly from the Tudor Heritage Ranger's late 60's inspiration, is simple, legible and entirely classic in its appeal. While it may lack the detail and refinement of the beautiful dial found on on the Black Bay, the Tudor Heritage Ranger's dial speaks to the values of a field watch and exudes a rugged simplicity similar to that of a chukka boot. If you want some shine and ornamentation, get something else. I love the darker red tone used for the seconds hand, I adore the lack of a date display, and the antique lume is both bright and long-lasting at night, while offering an entirely different look to that of the current Rolex Explorer.
The Cartier Rotonde de Cartier Tourbillon Chronograph unquestionably is a niche offering – interestingly, it is also unusual within the collection, bearing a sourced movement, that is not entirely in line with Cartier's direction as far as in-house movements are concerned. Nevertheless, it is nice to see major manufactures with plenty of resources invested into proprietary calibers harness the know-how of external specialists – as often times they are the ones who surprise us with the genuinely interesting stuff, by giving work to the crazy horological scientists, working behind the scenes. A shining example of whom is Carole Forestier-Kasapi, the head of fine watchmaking at Cartier, and a watchmaking mastermind who worked with APR&P at an early stage of her carrier. Limited to just fifty pieces, the Cartier Rotonde de Cartier Tourbillon is priced at 135,000 Euros or around 3,000. cartier.com
A few years, ago the notion of “stealth wealth” was pretty popular - meaning a very high-end piece that only a select group of people could recognize as being special. Today, bling is back in a big way, but that doesn’t need to apply everywhere. In platinum, this new ultra-thin self-winding (with a peripheral rotor) chronograph features just the time and power reserve with a split-second monopusher controlled chronograph. Those in the know are aware that split-second chronographs are among the most difficult to assemble mechanical complications around – which, coming from Vacheron Constantin, helps explain the intense asking price. The caliber 3500 movement is beautiful, with a new element we find in a series of novel Vacheron Constantin calibers – a hand-engraved 18k gold balance cock. At 9,200 the limited edition of 10 Vacheron Constantin Harmony Ultra-Thin Grande Complication Chronograph Caliber 3500 is sublime, and destined for the very few. vacheron-constantin.com

Finishing on the MB&F Starfleet Machine base and movement is very nice and thankfully varied. There is so much to look at and appreciate, and anyone interesting mechanical objects is going to like it. Some surfaces are polished and others are given a Cotes de Geneva striping. The numerals on the hour and minute indicator dome are iconic to MB&F, which helps people recognize the design as coming from them.
As unsettlingly weird as the design of the Hoptoff No. 16 atomic wrist watch is, I have to give credit where credit is due - it could have gone a lot worse. The watch does look actually wearable, and while not really modern in its design. it does do everything it says it does... even if it does so in a way that looks like I am staring at a dress watch from the 1980s with double vision.
8. Marc Newson obsessed over ergonomics and comfort. As a result, he designed a totally custom an unique looking rubber strap to be used on most of his Ikepod watches, which was supposed to make them fit perfectly balanced on one's wrist. The Ikepod rubber strap was initially released in 1996, and was the first result of Marc Newson dabbling in CAD (computer-aided design). UPDATE: The fluorolastomer strap on the Apple Watch looks very reminiscent of this design, and it is highly likely that Newson worked on it.
Swatch Irony collection timepieces have a huge amount of variety and tend to be the slightly higher-end Swatch models, as they use some metal in the cases – most of these watches, for example, have aluminum and plastic cases. These models further focus on futuristic design, which I think is pretty cool. Given the "XLite" name, it is also safe to say that the Swatch Irony XLite collection timepieces aren't at all heavy on the wrist.
What is perhaps the most surprising to me is the comparatively small price difference between the Armin Strom One Week Skeleton and the Armin Strom Skeleton Pure of just a few thousand dollars (for the 18k red gold "Fire" version that is). The Armin Strom Skeleton Pure is also available in steel with the Armin Strom Skeleton Pure Water model. Further, the Skeleton Pure Air watch will have a titanium case while the Skeleton Pure Earth has a PVD black-coated steel case. Those deciding between the models will have a lot to consider when thinking about what they are getting with an Armin Strom that has an in-house movement that is finely skeletonzied or finely skeletonized and hand-engraved. It might be a matter of taste, or it might simply be a matter of availability.
In addition to connecting to your smartphone via Bluetooth 4.0, the Samsung Gear S has its own SIM card slot for 2G and 3G connections. That means while the Gear S is intended to go with your phone, it can live independently without it. Samsung claims that switching between Bluetooth and WiFi connections is simple, and the idea is to allow for the watch to continue offering notifications, emails, etc... while the Gear S is not within range of your phone. Samsung also appears to suggest that you can make calls directly from the Gear S. There is an onscreen QWERTY keyboard (which I am sure is... amazingly fun to use) and the Gear S also features voice control that, ideally, works properly as well.
Leeds & Son: Palm Springs area is known for year-round sunshine, tennis, and golf. We have over 120 golf courses in this valley. The A. Lange & Söhne Lange 1 Tourbillon case is a modest 38.5mm wide, and here, in solid platinum. It is joined to a black alligator strap and should wear quite nicely for most people. I particularly enjoy how the A. Lange & Söhne Lange 1's off-centered dial has aged. I am personally not a huge fan of many asymmetrical watches, but this is among the exceptions. One of the things I like is the clarity and simplicity of the dial for the time itself, which is made just a bit more interesting with the also off-centered subsidiary seconds dial inside of it.
The funny thing about Willard Wigan's work is that much of it is a bit cheeky or based on pop culture and popular media. If his stuff was larger and not hand-made, it would be the type of things you'd find being sold in tourist shops along Hollywood Boulevard. Subjects he has enjoyed in the past are cartoon characters, animals, politicians, and items people use in their normal lives. Greubel Forsey themselves offer a PDF that shows off a lot of his work and talks more about who Willard Wigan is.
