The outer internal bezel of the Oris Big Crown ProPilot Altimeter watch has a scale for the altitude, while the inner part (which is recessed) uses the rear of the yellow tipped hand to indicate the barometric pressure. Oris will actually make two versions of the watch available, one with a scale for meters and another for an altitude scale in feet.

One of the most striking watches that Audemars Piguet debuted at this year’s SIHH has got to be their all-white ceramic Offshore Diver. Already, the Offshore Diver watches are big, beefy watches, but in all-white, this watch is even more outstanding and commands serious wrist presence. Here’s a closer look at this eye-catching watch.

I interviewed many people at the Hong Kong show on how they design watches, what inspires them, and who they are designing watches for. What I learned was that precious few of them take a more global approach to design, considering everything from taste to trends, as well as being unique. What many do is try to replicate designs without actually copying them, while at the same time trying to combine elements of various successful designs. The logic is simple, if you have little time to design a new watch, the best thing to do is take what works elsewhere and modifying it for your needs while trying to throw everything else you like in the bucket. It is the exact opposite of the "less is more" rule.

Part of helping our audience discover more content was about re-thinking the basic layout of each page as well as the navigation structure. Topical areas can be narrowed down a lot more to help new and existing users discover tools and guides that will assist them in learning about or buying watches. One of the areas that we will continue to focus on and build out is our WATCH BUYING GUIDE. That's because we've experienced a lot of demand for it, and want to make sure that we service our audience with tools they need to become just as knowledgeable as we are.

Smartwatches have been around for decades, especially if we include the earliest Pulsar calculator and Casio Databank watches. The Casio Databank has a calculator, appointments, contact name, address and phone numbers. It’s almost a proto-PDA. Then we actually got wrist PDAs that ran PalmOS from Fossil. Microsoft and Fossil made the SPOT watches, Sony Ericsson made watches that had Bluetooth in them, yet none of these has enjoyed widespread adoption. Why is now different? What’s changed in the approach?

Konstantin Chaykin has a legitimate manufacture, and is the only high-end watchmaker in Russia at this time. Though there are a few little guys here and there and some people working on new brands. What is really interesting to me is that even within his home country he is controversial. That is really strange, and I am not sure I totally understand why. There is one very important detail I need to mention that I don't think people are totally clear on. Konstantin Chaykin buys zero parts from Switzerland. Most high-end watchmakers around the world (not all) still often buy at least a few parts from Switzerland. These are usually hard to make movement parts such as hairsprings. Konstantin Chaykin gets their hairsprings from Saint Petersburg-based Raketa.

The Benu line houses their new 100.0 calibre, which features a 2/3 plate made of German silver. This not only is a hallmark of the region, it's also a way of increasing strength and stability, while still allowing a view of the balance wheel through the caseback. The movements are lovely, but so are the dials. Here is a textbook example of how properly sized hands can make or break a watch design. So kudos to these guys for getting it right.

8. Invest in a timepiece for various occasions. Timepieces are a lot like shoes, and no one expects you to have just one pair for all situations. Think of a watch in that way and it makes sense that you'll need one for formal occasions, with jeans, outdoors in nature, and for sports.

Jacques Fournier: What makes the business and state of mind different is quiet simple - Others have ideas and do things very well, but the main focus should be to look elsewhere, where no one has ever looked, be daring and sincere. I think individualism is extremely important, you can be copied, but try not to be compared... As per working for myself yes I would happily do so and be eager to learn on a daily basis, it certainly is a lot of fun. I believe it is important to have at least 5 to 10 good ideas per day and investigate further the ones you can, one might lead to something positive & unexpected.

For much of its life, the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak was 39mm wide. The Royal Oak Offshore models in the 1990s upped that to 44mm wide with the larger Chronograph versions. Recently Audemars Piguet released an updated version of the iconic Royal Oak in a 41mm wide case (hands-on here). In 2010 when Audemars Piguet released the Royal Oak Offshore Diver, it not only offered an interesting middle ground between the original Royal Oak and the Offshore, but also a middle size coming in at 42mm wide. more »

Sure, other watch companies have sponsored teams in the past and will continue to do so, and at this year's cup, other watch companies have center stage at each game. But only one watch brand can claim to sponsor the most storied team in football and do so with a watch I would be glad to wear this year and any year thereafter. While Brazil's exit on their home turf was not pleasant or expected, any fan knows that the true meaning of loving a team is doing so in good times and in hard times. Wearing a watch like the Parmigiani Fleurier Pershing CBF is representative of that love and a reminder to all that Brazilian football will be back stronger and better.

Up in the air testing the Oris Big Crown ProPilot Altimeter watch, I wanted to compare it with the digital altimeter in my Casio G-Shock Rangeman (reviewed here). In many instances mechanical watch brands release things which are supposed to be "awesome" but are easily available in a more accurate, and cheaper digital package. So I was interested to see how Oris - a reliably good "tool watch" brand - fared against a digital altimeter watch.

The Bell & Ross BR 03 Golden Heritage line has two models, a three-hander (the BR 03-92) and a chronograph (BR 03-94). Both models feature a 42 mm wide satin-finished steel case, anti-reflective sapphire crystal, 100M water resistance and sport a wide brown leather strap. The three hand BR 03-92 Golden Heritage is powered by a Sellita SW 300 and has a date display at 4:30.

According to reports at Macrumors and Watson.ch here's how we suspect that it's Apple filing the new iWatch trademark registrations.

  1. Apple, or lawyers who have filed on behalf of Apple in the past, filed for the iWatch trademark in Russia, Japan, Taiwan, Turkey, India, Colombia, Chilé, Jamaica and Mexico.
  2. Apple has used shell companies to register marks for unannounced products in the past. Where a trademark application doesn't name Apple explicitly, in countries like the USA, a company called Brightflash USA LLC is pursuing registrations.
  3. Brightflash has pursued registrations in at least 4 dozen countries.
  4. Brightflash is located at the same mailing address as CarPlay Enterprises, the shell corporation Apple used before announcing their car audio integration work under the trademark CarPlay. This alone wouldn't mean much, but
  5. The Baker & Mackenzie law firm was the legal representative of CarPlay Enterprises, and is also the representative for Brightflash LLC in Switzerland.

The dive model uses one of my favorite movements, the Sellita Sw300, which is a clone of the ETA 2892. Thinner at 3.6mm, the 300/2892 is a chronometer and an excellent choice. Wempe modifies it with their custom fine regulator, too. Wempe lists the size as 42mm, with 20mm lugs, but does not mention thickness. If it's 12mm or less, I'd be delighted. Ceramic bezel, anti-reflective-coated sapphire, 300m depth rating.

Personally, I am rather excited by this because I've been waiting for a new X-33 for years. Omega has a need to work with current astronauts as well as historic ones to retain its image as the "space watch," and this is a way to do it. Omega claims that the watch will be certified by NASA to be used in their space missions in the near future, and that the Omega Speedmaster Skywalker X-33 has already been approved by the ESA (European Space Agency) for use in space and on the ISS. Further, Omega is said to have worked with astronaut Jean-Francois Clervoy on the design of this watch.
